We are proud and excited to announce the Rep Coaches for 2017-2018 season.  


Dean Shiels – Atom A (C1) Head Coach

Dean played Junior B for the Grandview Steelers, Junior A (BCHL) for the Langley Thunder and was an Academic All-Canadian Defencemen for the UBC Thunderbirds (CIS). After College Hockey he played for the Powell River Regals (Senior AAA) and won an Allan Cup National Championship in 2006. In 2007 Dean played for Team Canada in an International Pool A World tournament in Belarus (The Polese Cup) where they played top KHL team Salavat Yulaev Ufa, the Belarus National Team and the Latvia National Team.

Dean’s Coaching Background
Dean has coached and taught hockey players from Atom to the NHL level for the past 18 years.  He is the Vice President of Athlete Services & Franchise, Senior Performance Coach & On-Ice Skills and Skating Coach for TWIST Performance + Wellness.  He has also coached and trained over 75 NHL players both on and off the ice and hundreds of Pro, Junior, College players and elite minor hockey players since 2003. Notable players Dean has worked with from their bantam and junior age and through their NHL career include Morgan Reilly (Toronto Maple Leafs), Karl Alzner (Washington Capitals) and Dan Hamhuis (Dallas Stars). In his minor hockey experience he has coached Bantam AAA, Vancouver Selects and Initiation in Cloverdale and assisted with the Surrey Falcons Novice team this past year.

Dean’s specialty is powerskating with a focus on speed and power development, movement, skill development and  strength and conditioning.

He has a Bachelors of Human Kinetics and a Masters in Business (MBA) as well as Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach (NSCA) and aTWIST Master Coach.


Kelly Leroux – Peewee A Head Coach

Kelly during his hockey career played for the Richmond Sockeyes in the BCJHL, Kitchener Rangers in the OHL, Milton Merchants in COJHL, Canisius College ECAC-W, the Johnstown Chiefs to name a few.

Coaching Background

Kelly’s coaching experience includes time spent as a private skills instructor and a Rep Coach for Minor Hockey in the United States and Lower Mainland. Over the past 6 seasons he has been Head Coach or Assistant Coach for the Surrey Falcons Association which has included Tyke, Novice, Atom and Peewee A and C2.

Kelly was Awarded Coach of the year for the 2015-2016 season and was nominated this past season for Coach of the year and President Merritt’s award.  Kelly took his Atom A team from playing the Atom A division to the Peewee C1 black tier by the end of the 2016-2017 season.  His team finished off the season winning the Peewee Blue Division Play-off banner with a record of 20-5-2.  Kelly also assisted in coaching the Peewee A team to the Provincials this year finishing 4th place in the province.


Les Pilchak – Bantam A Head Coach
Les grew up in Richmond, BC playing the majority of his minor hockey for Seafair. He believes a big part of winning is having a clear vision of what makes a team successful both on and off the ice and is excited to help other young athletes achieve their goals. He espouse’s a team-first philosophy and challenges players to understand and experience the benefits of unselfish play and true teamwork.

Coaching Background

Les started coaching Div1 intramural Hockey at UBC and moved on to coaching Peewee A and B for South Delta Minor Hockey. He has either coached or assisted with various team in Surrey Female Hockey Association from Novice to Bantam over the past 5 seasons. He also assisted our Peewee A team this year in Provinicals.

In addition to Les’s experiences with Surrey Female, he has been working with BC Hockey in various capacities as an evaluator for Program of Excellence; Head Coach for the U18 Female team for the 2017; U16 Female Head Coach for the 2016 season; Assistant Coach for the U16 Female team in 2015.
Les’s certifications include the Hybrid, Developmental 1, and High Performance 1 coaching certifications.


Ryan Dorohoy – Midget A Head Coach 

Ryan grew up in Surrey playing AAA Minor Hockey and then going on to play four years of junior hockey and was awarded Team Allstar.

Coaching Background

Ryan has coached in the Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association for the past 10 seasons at all levels including Bantam Rep.  He most recently coached our Bantam A team for the 2016-2017 season winning the President’s series Banner.
Ryan has also coached in the BC Blackhawks AAA spring program for the past 7 years. In addition to coaching for the BC Blackhawks, Ryan has run skills camps and development sessions for SK Hockey.
He has also been a referee for the past 20 years and is certified to coach in High Performance programs.


As you can see, we are not only excited but honoured to have an experienced group of coaches working with our Minor Hockey Association.
